Changes to European Union Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2)

Significant changes came into force in 2021 in the European Union Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2), removing exemptions for high levels of lead and cadmium in certain materials. In particular, the previously existing exemptions for the content of lead in copper and aluminum alloys, steels and high-temperature solders have been cancelled. Also eliminated are exemptions for lead in glass and ceramic electronic components, lead and cadmium in filters and optical glasses, cadmium in electrical contacts, and lead in a number of other materials. After the cancellation of exemptions, general requirements apply to such materials no more than 0.01% for cadmium and no more than 0.1% for other substances. All these exceptions have been canceled since 2021 for almost all categories of equipment, with the exception of measuring instruments and medical devices. For them, the abolition of these exceptions will occur in 2023 and 2024, respectively. If there are exceptions to the RoHS directive test reports, we recommend that you check whether these exceptions have expired and, if necessary, replace the relevant materials.
